About this tool

Carrier Check retrieves publicly available data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to help identify potential risk factors when evaluating a motor carrier. It is intended as a starting point for due diligence, not a complete or final safety determination.

Data vintage

The information shown reflects FMCSA's records as of the date and time of the lookup logged for that report. FMCSA's underlying data has known reporting lag: crash and inspection records can take weeks or months to appear, safety ratings are often years old, and many carriers are never issued a rating at all ("Not Rated"). A carrier that looks clean today may not yet reflect recent events FMCSA hasn't recorded.

A one-time, point-in-time check

Each lookup reflects a single snapshot at the moment it was run — it is not continuous monitoring. A carrier's authority, insurance, or safety profile can change at any time afterward. Carriers used on an ongoing basis should be periodically re-checked, not evaluated once and assumed unchanged for the life of the relationship.

Insurance shown "on file"

Insurance figures reflect what has been filed with FMCSA, which may not reflect current, active coverage — FMCSA's filing status can lag an actual lapse or change in coverage. Confirming current insurance directly with the carrier or their insurance agent, via an up-to-date certificate of insurance, is recommended before relying on this tool's insurance figures alone.

Judgment and documentation

This tool surfaces information and flags possible risk factors; it does not make hiring decisions. Any decision to onboard, continue, or discontinue use of a carrier remains a business judgment made by the reviewing employee. When a flagged risk factor is discussed with a carrier and a decision is made to proceed, that conversation and its reasoning should be documented separately from this tool.
